It’s the time of the year when news editors will be thinking about their priorities for the coming year. For online news sites, is it going to be video, user-generated content or social media?
For at least one UK newspaper website, The Telegraph, 2008 is going to be all about video. Edward Roussel, the digital editor at Telegraph Media Group says this is the site’s biggest priority for next year, though it also wants to do more with user-generated content.
The Telegraph’s enthusiasm seems well-placed. Roussel says the site had seen 3 million video downloads during November. Last month was the busiest month for Telegraph.co.uk, with 12,800,627 unique users, a more than 100% year-on-year traffic growth.
Interestingly, Roussel wants better ways of measuring audiences, arguing that video consumption is not reflected in the headline figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic.

We at the Platypus Workshops were wondering when the UK papers were going to wake up. Here is the US, the move to video is nothing less than an explosion. Our workshops have taught photojournalists the language of video documentary for nine years around the country. In the past year, almost all our workshops have been filled by newspaper photographrs. We have also done short courses and workshops on-site for newspapers such as The Bee Newpapers, The Western Newspapers, The Bakersfield Californian, The Springfield, MA Republican and the NY Times. In February we do a both a workshop and a short course for The Houston Chronicle. We find that moving to video rejuvenates the staff and creates a mission for the future.
