The list of finalists for the Online Journalism Awards is out. As usual, it is dominated by US entries.
One notable exception is Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper, nominated for its Talking to the Taliban special in the investigative and multimedia categories .
Also interesting to note that the Huffington Post and Politico are one of the finalists in the General Excellence, Large Site, category, up against the likes of The New York Times, Reuters and CNN. Both are examples of new journalism outlets that have emerged thanks to the internet.
Ironically, the list fails to include the finalists in the non English-language awards (large and small). This was a new category added this year in recognition that the US does not have a monopoly on excellence in online journalism.
The winners will be announced at the 2008 ONA Conference Awards on September 13 Washington, D.C.
UPDATE: ONA acting executive director Tom Regan has sent out an e-mail to ONA members with the finalists in the non English-language categories. They are Einestages.de, German, ELPAIS.com, Spain, and Oglobo.com.br, Brazil, in the Large Site category and Aldiatx.com, USA, Blogtrotters.fr, France and Soitu.es, Spain, in the Small Site one.

The Ottawa Citizen (Canada’s national daily) was also nominated for an award for our 70 Years of Superman site. You are right (the U.S. dominates these awards) but there is more than one Canadian publication included in the nominations.
Thanks for the correction Vito. Good luck with the awards.
[...] This US bias can be found elsewhere. For example, the nominees for the ONA awards, honouring the best in online journalism, are largely dominated by US news outlets. [...]
