Bartosz Wojdynski and Jessica Smith from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill looked at whether there are demographic predictors of online content creation in their presentation at the Convergence and Society conference.
Using data from Pew from 2005, they tried to work out whether it is true that young people tend to create more content online than an older generation.
They found that this was generally true – 18 to 23 year-olds tended to create a lot more content online than their older counterparts.
But more interestingly, they found that content creation decreased by about 1% for every year as people got older, with a slight upswing when people reached their late 50s.
One possible reason for this may be that young people may have more time on their hands to do this online when they are in their early 20s, and less once they enter the workforce, get married and start having kids.
