The Globe and Mail has beefed up its digital news operation, with the appointment of Anjali Kapoor in the newly-created position of Managing Editor, Digital, and the return of Kenny Yum as Editor, globeandmail.com.

The changes were announced by the Globe’s John Stackhouse in an e-mail to staff, saying:

These changes are very much driven by my desire to have an editorial management team that is focused on the decade ahead, open to ideas and experiences from across all media, eager to work with other departments, entrepreneurial about the way we work, and passionate about great journalism.

Kapoor joins the Globe after serving for two years as director of Yahoo Canada’s media group.

She will report directly to Stackhouse, who outlined her role:

Anjali will play a pivotal role in crafting and executing the editorial department’s digital strategy, taking the lead on new projects, identifying the best platforms for our content, and helping us all find new ways to make our journalism thrive in the digital realm.

Yum had been involved in the launch of globeandmail.com from 2000 to 2006 and returns to the Globe from The National Post. Stackhouse told staff:

A natural leader, Kenny will be responsible for all editorial content that appears on the websites of The Globe and Mail, with a particular emphasis on breaking news. He will be an instrumental member of our strategic team charged with product development and execution within our digital media division. He will also oversee our web core team.

Due to the new appointments, Jim Sheppard “will take on an expanded role as executive editor, globeandmail.com”, responsible for traffic analysis and management.

Kapoor and Yum take on their new roles in August.
