A keynote delivered by Alfred Hermida at the Screen Futures conference in Melbourne in July 2011, on the distance between what participatory journalism promised and what newsrooms were actually doing with it.
The evidence came from the co-authored book Participatory Journalism: Guarding Open Gates at Online Newspapers, a study of how online newspapers handled audience contribution. Its finding, as the talk put it, was that journalists were navigating uncharted waters: working out how to bring the audience into the professional process of producing journalism at the same time as the practice of journalism was trying to retain its structure and integrity, its rules and roles, its organisations and its traditions. The gates were open, but they were still being guarded.
