A short announcement, in November 2007, that the journal Journalism Practice had accepted a paper co-written by Alfred Hermida and Neil Thurman of City University, London.
The paper was titled A clash of cultures: The integration of user-generated content within professional journalistic frameworks at British newspaper websites, and examined how the leading UK newspaper websites had responded to material sent in by readers. It had been presented at the Future of Newspapers conference in Cardiff in September 2007, and the conference version was posted alongside the announcement as a PDF.
The title carried the finding. What the study described at British newspaper sites was not a new publishing model but an older one absorbing contributions on its own terms, with the frameworks of professional journalism left largely intact.
