Guy Berger, head of the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, won a $630,000 Knight News Challenge grant in 2008 for a project called News is Coming. In a filmed interview he explained the aim: local news reports distributed by cellphone, to connect an all-black township with the white population living in the urban centre of the same town.
The design assumption is the interesting part. In Grahamstown the cellphone was the device people already had, so the project treated it as the distribution network rather than as a reporting gadget, and treated the gap between two populations in one place as the thing local news had failed to bridge.
