The page carried a recording of a panel discussion on how social media were changing journalism, held on 7 November 2011 at UBC Robson in Vancouver and sponsored by UBC Continuing Studies and the UBC Graduate School of Journalism.
On the panel: Liz Heron, then social media editor at the New York Times; Karen Pinchin, founding editor of OpenFile Vancouver; Steve Pratt, director of CBC Radio 3 and CBC Radio digital programming; and Alfred Hermida of the UBC journalism school. The line-up put a large American newsroom, a local start-up experiment and a public broadcaster’s digital operation on the same platform, which was the useful part of the exercise in 2011 — the practice was being worked out separately, and differently, at each of those scales.
Alexis Beckett, a student at the school, wrote the session up for J-Source.ca.
